I had a smoked fish salad for starters which should have been called a smoked salmon salad because I couldn't find any other species in there. The smoked salmon was really good but the salad wasn't up to much. The second course though was a delight, a surprisingly well thought of combination of anglerfish and red endives. Will have to try that at home. Just under €45 a head, which was less than I was expecting and quite good value for the quality of the place and the food. Service was attentive and quite quick, though I would have preferred if it was always the same waiter. http://www.zootoon.com/catfood/fitxa.php?id_post=242 Sun, 11 May 2008 22:53:51 +0100 Hostal Santa Maria If you go off for a drive in the country on a Sunday, you can often get stuck for a place to eat, as happened to us today. We found a nice looking restaurant in l'Estany but that and the other one in the village were full so we kept on driving until we came across Santa Maria d'Oló, which has a surprisingly big hostel where they were happy to have us. Very friendly they were too and quick. The servings are enormous, especially my Costa Brava salad, which had shrimp, prawns, mussels, anchovies, salmon, tuna and other things. My wife said the esqueixada was a bit too salty, which isn't the best idea in summer. My cuttlefish were great and she said the pork was very good (and plentiful). Just under €50 in all. It was a nice touch giving the bill to my wife. No smoking but you can always go into the bar. http://www.zootoon.com/catfood/fitxa.php?id_post=112 Sun, 04 May 2008 23:26:28 +0100 La Rectoria Sant Sebastià de Montmajor is a tiny 1000-year-old village with a church that takes up half the place and some very nicely restored houses. It's really out of the way, so you'll mostly see cyclists and bikers at this quaint and wholesome restaurant which was renovated just last year. We had enormous slabs of bread and omelette and llonganissa for my better half, along with a plate of chips, wine and a couple of coffees for just €18. Very friendly staff. They have a terrace too. It would be a good idea to phone ahead if it's for lunch as it easily fills up if they get a big group of cyclists, who all looked like they were putting on double the weight they'd lost on the way. http://www.zootoon.com/catfood/fitxa.php?id_post=140 Sun, 04 May 2008 22:40:25 +0100 Martinet Bru 2003 I found this to be very much in the line of Les Terrasses and some other Priorats in that it's very intense and even an hour open doesn't seem to be enough. At the same time the minerals were very interesting (my wife says it gives her the same feeling on her tongue as fresh spinach and she's not all that far off). Red fruit and emmental cheese. Good wine but for this price I'd rather spend my money on a Laurona or a Masia Esplanes, though this wine does get very good reviews. http://www.zootoon.com/catfood/fitxa.php?id_post=237 Sun, 04 May 2008 22:35:46 +0100 Sumarroca Blanc de Blancs 2007 Acceptable white table wine for the price (about €3.40). It helps a lot if you serve it very cold. http://www.zootoon.com/catfood/fitxa.php?id_post=236 Sun, 04 May 2008 22:00:11 +0100 Tayaimgut Sauvignon Blanc 2004 Just as good as their red, this white from the highest part of the Penedés has body without being as heavy as Costers del Segre whites. As usual, there's a little leaflet that goes with the bottle explaining everything you might want to know about the wine and it's background. You can also find this at their web. Low acidity. Tropical fruit. 11.5º. http://www.zootoon.com/catfood/fitxa.php?id_post=235 Sun, 04 May 2008 21:19:09 +0100 Albet i Noya Lignum 2006 A bit weak on the aroma, I thought there was more than 48% chardonnay. Not sure about the coupage but good for the price. http://www.zootoon.com/catfood/fitxa.php?id_post=233 Fri, 02 May 2008 19:44:00 +0100 Gresca We had a wonderful set menu (€18 without wine) here today. Quite a small place but it wasn't hard to get a table. Top-class service, excellent glasses etc and a very well chosen and reasonably-priced wine-list. For starters (after an aperitif) I had llangueta (a tiny fried fish) on top of a fried egg. These things are usually just solid fat but this was perfect. My wide had a very tasty tomato salad. We then both had one of the best tunas I've ever had, accompanied by some lightly fried courgettes and aubergines. All washed down by a Veigarades albariño. A chocolate dessert, great coffee and a Fillaboa orujo, all in all a lunch to remember. Something to recommend until people are sick of hearing you. http://www.zootoon.com/catfood/fitxa.php?id_post=107 Fri, 02 May 2008 19:22:32 +0100 Bonviure Jaume (pronounce tchaomé) is the Bonviure young manager, sympatic and efficient. The said incredible selection of wines includes an attractive panel of "milésimes" (cosecha/vendemia) in some well known Priorat such as Les Terrasses, Clos Martinet... http://www.zootoon.com/catfood/fitxa.php?id_post=27 Fri, 02 May 2008 01:41:36 +0100 Joanet Lovely, shaded, traffic-free square for their terrace. Nice enough food, though not too fresh seeing it was Sunday, and very nice people. The fried artichokes are worth a try. They could do with some more wines. My wife says the home-made crema catalana was very good. http://www.zootoon.com/catfood/fitxa.php?id_post=230 Sun, 27 Apr 2008 18:52:40 +0100
